Transgender Day of Remembrance

Postby MadCat on Sun Nov 21, 2010 5:21 am

Today, November 20th, is the Transgender Day of Remembrance... the day to remember all the innocent people who were senselessly murdered for daring to be themselves.

According to Wikipedia, "It is claimed that around the world, one transgender person is murdered every three days." Gayrights.change.org states "Around one-third of transgender youth have attempted suicide, over half of transgender youth have been physically attacked, and a vast majority feel unsafe unsafe in school."

What really makes me angry about this (among many other things) is that in the eyes of the law, "Trans panic" is considered a valid excuse for murder, and the "blame the victim" mentality is widespread in these cases. "He/she/it deserved it" or "It's their own fault for dressing that way."

Thank you for sharing, I wish that I had had more notice.

I generally make a T-shirt or awareness ribbon for myself for these types of days. And I carry a soap box.

Though... I sadly, I may be toning that down since my move to a more rural area. :[

Yeah... I meant to keep track of this one, and thought about it during October/early November, but then November got so busy and passed so fast, and I completely missed it.... If I'd remembered ahead of time, I could have made Saturday's strip about it. Poo.

I'm very glad to hear about your awareness activities! It sucks that you would have to 'tone it down' because of prejudiced neighbors.

(Although I've heard some rural areas are surprisingly tolerant, even more so than some larger cities. There may even be an LGBTQ group in your area that you could check out! Fingers are crossed!)

Another site I found, the Online Art Vigil:
http://tdor.weebly.com/index.html

They say "This year alone, twenty-five people were murdered due to anti-transgender hatred. The brutality with which these crimes are committed is beyond description. These killings tend to be glossed over by the public at large, either out of fear, ignorance, or unwillingness to confront the issue. And don't forget, for every hate crime made public, there is another that goes unreported."

Rrggh.

I've decided that even though my gay coworker is adult and can take car of himself, that if I hear another peep about his sexuality from one of the high schoolers I'll be on him like a cat on a windy feather.

Don't worry, the toning down is really just leaving the soapbox. No need to pick fights.

Thanks for the link.

Ahh, good old survival instinct. I can understand that one; it's kept me from storming out of a couple family events, including a Christmas Eve once.

Yeah-- the best way to deal with ignorance, I think, is to counter with information; if they're ignorant of how inappropriate their hate speech is, it's good to inform them that it's not acceptable. (In a perfect world, of course. Sometimes all you can do is put your head down and persevere, which is frustrating.)
