German-ation
I have to say that I didn't know about the Iron Sky project until now - and it sounds awesome! Can't wait.
My earliest influence, as far as Nazis in space go, would be an episode of Star Trek that I saw as a kid. This merely planted the seed in my mind as there were no swastika-shaped space stations or oxygen-masked stormtroopers in the Star Trek episode. What it did have was a clear picture of a society rushing headlong into an abyss of facism without the perspective of history, as the crew of the Enterprise had.
The secondary foundational stone, if you will, was laid down by the Star Wars movies. If the Galactic Empire is not a metaphor for Nazi Germany, I don't know what is.
The third and final influence would have to be, strangely enough, the James Bond movie Moonraker. That movie was campy and absurd to a fault - so much so that many fans of 007 count it as one of the worst Bond movies of all time. However, the alchemy that produced the current Squishy storyline could not be denied as somewhere in the recesses of my subconcious the concept of lasergun-wielding, goosestepping, yellow jumpsuit-wearing Nazis took shape with inexorable certainty.
