And the Oscar Snubby goes to...
I was surprised to learn that J. Edgar was not nominated for any awards this year. It had a cast of resourceful and talented actors (Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, et al.), it was directed by Clint Eastwood, and it's a biopic -- a surefire formula for Oscar success. I was about 60-65% on wanting to see this film. Now I must see it.
A couple of movies that didn't make any awards season noise were Super 8 and Contagion. One can argue that Super 8 didn't break any artistic sound barriers, but the film had a poetic quality that brought back the magic of old movies. It's definitely one for Generation X.
Contagion was middling in plot, low in premise (we've seen this type of movie a million times), and decently acted but it's the directing (in this case Steven Soderbergh) that makes it notable. Watch it and tell me you don't feel uneasy every time the camera lingers on a door handle after it's been touched.
That's it for now. Gotta go to class. See you next time!
